BAP Union, a Sail Training tall ship operated by the Peruvian Navy

Since 1985 it has been the intention of Peru to build a Sail Training tall ship for its navy, though due to many economic issues in the years since, it wasn't until 2010 that the project for BAP Unión was finally approved. Following three years of construction, she was then commissioned in early 2016 during a ceremony attended by the President of Peru, Ollanta Humala.

Her first training cruise, which began in July 2016, saw her visit many international ports including Guayaquil in Ecuador, Cartagena in Colombia, San Juan in Puerto Rico, La Habana in Cuba and Miami in the USA. Unión is not only a training vessel for cadets, but also an ambassador for the nation of Peru, so there's no doubt she will be attending many international tall ships events in the yeas to come. She has already confirmed participation in the Velas LatinoAmérica 2018 series, which will see her join at least 10 other class A naval tall ships from across the world to sail through numerous festivals in 12 South American countries.

Did You Know? Many navies from across the world use tall ships like Unión to expose their cadets to an experience known as 'Sail Training', a course in personal and professional development championed worldwide for its effectiveness in developing key skills in leadership, teamwork and more.
