South Passage is a 100ft gaff-rigged schooner sailed the traditional way along the Australian eastern seaboard from Sydney to Cairns. Our primary focus is school-based day sails and voyages and also provide Duke of Edinburgh Award adventurous journeys. During our passage up and down the coastline, we sometimes have delivery voyages that we open to the public to join the crew for a short time to experience life on board a traditionally sailed vessel at sea.

South Passage is owned and operated by Sail Training Association of Queensland, South Passage has taken over 50 000 young people to sea over the past 25 years. Our Vision is to grow and develop young people through adventure under sail. Our Mission is to provide safe and challenging experiences for young men and women using the ship as a medium to develop leadership, initiative, independence and self-discipline. We have a crew of 6 - a professional skipper, sail master and cook plus three volunteer watch leaders. Voyage participants are allocated into one of the three watches and are rostered on a rotating 24/7 basis for the duration of the voyage. The crew on watch are responsible for all aspects of the progress of the vessel, from sail setting, tacking, gybing, helming and navigation. No prior experience is necessary - we will teach you "the ropes"!
