The name of this sail training ship comes from a medieval ruler of her home country known as Mircea The Elder. During his reign (1382 – 1418) Wallachia gained its most wide surface which gave the country access to the Black Sea.
The unanimous creed of the crew and the cadets learning the sailing secrets nowadays is: "I serve the Navy, I serve my country!". Away from the country and their loved ones, they all find on board of Mircea one great family that stand together for good and for bad, working with solidarity and deep attachment. Along with the Romanian military students, NS Mircea has on board foreign cadets from Bulgaria, Albania, Ukraine, China, France, Portugal, Turkey and Poland.
N.S. Mircea was built after the altered plans of the German sail ship Gorch Foch. Currently, there are only four more ships of this type worldwide: Eagle (USA), Gorch Foch I & Gorch Foch II (Germany) and Sagres (Portugal).
