Step aboard the 19th century tall ship Belem in Port-Vendres, France.
Note: Belem will only be open to the public on the 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th, 30th and 31st of March.
Launched in 1896, Belem began life as a cargo ship transporting sugar from the West Indies as well as cocoa and coffee from Brazil and French Guiana to Nantes in France. Highlights in her history include ownership by Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster, and the beer baron Sir Author Ernest Guinness as well as a number of narrow escapes from disaster, including the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902 because the harbour had, by chance, been too full to accommodate her.
Ever since 1979, Belem has provided Sail Training opportunities to over 50,000 people whilst acting as an ambassador for her country and a sailing museum that attracts over 40,000 visitors a year in various ports across her home county and the world. In 1984 Belem was officially registered as a historical monument in France.
Whilst in Port-Vendres Belem will be open for the public to tour with 20 panels of information to take visitors through every part of her history. For an additional fee, visitors will be able to rent an iPad as a part of their tour which features recreations of the ship at different stages of her life, image galleries, selfie animation and even games for the younger visitors among you.
